The Gustav Mahler - Music and Youth Foundation was formed in 1999 at the initiative of Maestro Claudio Abbado, and is the result of long years of close collaboration between the city of Bolzano and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester. Every year in October, the foundation conducts master classes for advanced young musicians from all over Europe in cooperation with the European Social Fund: the programme is called the Gustav Mahler Academy.

The Gustav Mahler Academy has received the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic twice in acknowledgment of the excellence of its work.

The Gustav Mahler Foundation will offer online videos of the master classes given during the 12th Academy, which the public can access free of charge at www.digitalmahleracademy.com
